I've lived in Richmond off and on since 2007. It seems that Richmond has grown in terms of options for nightlife, including a lot of swanky new places downtown, but the numbers of people who go out seems to be dwindling. I checked out several places downtown tonight, including Southern Railway Taphouse and the restaurant below Off the Hookah, and both were pretty sparsely populated. I know it's a Thursday night, and not a Friday or Saturday, but Thursdays used to be a big going out night in Richmond. Is this time of year generally slow for night life since all the universities are on summer break? Or am I just having bad luck?

Richmond is unique in that it actually has too many retail and entertainment options. The market is overbuilt. I can't remember the exact stat, but Style Weekly published a story about how Richmond has an insane amount of retail space per capita. It leaves cities like Nashville in the dust. Richmond is projected to post strong growth for at least a few more decades, and everyone is hedging their bets that they're going to win out in the growth spree.

Richmond is restricted in its nightlife capabilities because of the Virginia food/alcohol sales ratio guidelines.

I think it's a few things. School is out. Once the students return, you'll see a noticeable difference. I also agree with others in that the Richmond market is saturated for restaurants and bars, leaving places a little hit or miss. Plus, Richmond is sleepy IMO.

Everyone is out of town for the summer. Normal rhythm.

Agreed, Even normal little rush hour tight spots seem non existent right now.

Students out and more diverse dining and nightlife options means dilution. IMO, there were only a handful of places to go in the past so those places got packed with clubgoers. Now that there is no ONE central area like Shockoe to go for nightlife, there's no longer that same crowded scene.

Richmond Nightlife is boring. You'll see the same people, at the same places, all the time.

That's really sad. I was never a fan of the place, but I did appreciate the love it got and the length of time it's been in business (it was always so busy). Rumor has it that "fine dining" is taking the spot, but the owner is denying it. I guess we'll see.
