I graduated a year ago and have lived in the city for 5 years. I'm interested in moving out of the city and buying a house. Where do you reccommend I look? What are the pros and cons of near west end, midlothian, and other counties? I work downtown so I don't want an awful (or expensive!) commute. Any thoughts?

A few details:
-working downtown Richmond
-Willing to spend 200-250K
-no more than 20 min. commute
-No kids, but consider public school district and quality of schools important
-Looking for up and coming area
-Community amenities important: restaurants, theaters, schools, shopping, etc.
-Pie of course!

Once again my response is going to be the Midlothian, Chesterfield County area with the price range you provided. It is definitely safe and the schools are excellent. There is a mixture of class levels and the residents will not tolerate crime.

I live in Chesterfield County (Midlothian in particular) and I must agree with the poster above. Schools are excellent! (I believe 5 schools were recently in the top 1000 in the nation, with James River and Midlothian High consistently being on there)..quick access to 288 and Powhite. Midlothian Turnpike and Hull street have restaurants, stores, and a mall out the wazoo. Between Henrico, Richmond City, and Chesterfield it is definitely the safest of the 3. I'd definitely look into Chesterfield. You can find quite a few homes on craigslist actually if you want to take a look at the type of home you can get for $200k-$250k.
