Hey all,

We're getting ready to complete our move to Roanoke from Richmond next week, and I was wondering if anyone had some advice on cell carriers in the region. We've been using AT&T in Richmond, but in our trips to Roanoke we've had some incredibly spotty reception. Typically Verizon is the best at everything, but how do they stack up here? Are Sprint, T-Mobile, or any regional carriers a decent option?

We're smartphone users, but service trumps phone, so phone selection doesn't need to be phenomenal if it's a regional.

Thanks!

-Stromson

We just switched (finally!) from AT&T to Verizon and it's 100% different. AT&T had us going outside our own home to talk on the phone. "Spotty" is not the word for it, but we were locked in until now. Love Verizon here.

Thanks for the responses all! I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one to have AT&T issues (and that universe is still in order and Verizon is still the best). I just found out yesterday that US Cellular operates in Roanoke, and I've heard good things about them in the past; does anyone have any experience with them?

ugh, I have been here for over a year now with my iphone and AT&T. Good thing I have loved my phone for things besides making calls, because I can't make or receive a call in this area with said carrier without dropping the call. In my home it mostly tells me No Service. I am now finally free to switch. I will miss the iphone and debate waiting until ( and if ) verizon gets it in January. Definitely stay away from AT&T if you don't have it already. It simply does not work in this area. Suc#s

Another vote for Verizon.

We had US Cellular for a long time before switching to Verizon. Coverage in town was actually pretty good, but went into roam quickly when you got out of town.

We just had two lines and two standard phones on US Cellular. We switched to Verizon and got two smartphones and data plans and ended up paying less than we did at US Cellular. If you work for a big company, check with them too. My wife works for one of the hospitals in town and we get a 22% discount just because she works there.

I am a big Mac geek, and I really want an iPhone, but the fact that they are only on AT&T is what keeps me from getting one.

VERIZON. We've been through them all and Verizon is by far the best.

Verizon, period. Have yet to find a place I cannot get a signal at.....up in the mountains, on the trails, even out with the RV dry camping and I get a good signal.....My boss had AT&T when he got here and still has problems just getting a signal here in town. You cannot do wrong with Verizon here. Good enough that you do not even need a land line and can use the cell phone as your home phone.
