This past summer we had an epidemic of stink bugs. They don't carry disease they just stink. I still have some leftover from the summer.
Mosquitoes can be found in the summer also. I have noticed they tend to be in areas near water like a lake, etc.
I have seen crickets, water bugs and praying mantis.

I assume you mean bad or biting insects:

Stink bugs (asian - brown)
Giant (european) hornets (if you're in the woods)
Wood ticks
Chiggers
Horse flies
Black widow spiders

plus the usual mosquitos/gnats/yellow jackets, etc

no fire ants

How common is it to see spiders around? Are the black widows the only bad spiders to worry about?

And bee's? how bad are they? do they fly in swarms?

On the bees, I don't see them flying in swarms. I have bumble bees around my rose garden and fruit trees in summer. I see wasps also.
I don't see many spiders(poisionous). I have seen the small non poisonous variety of spider that jumps around.

Oh Good!
That sounds like what we have here, easy to deal with.

Thank You!

The Brown Recluse and Black Widows are the only dangerous spiders in Virginia. RVA seemed to have covered the rest. I've only had a hand full of bites, and only attack by bees once... and I deserved the bee attack, just being young and dumb, with a rock.

Bumping this thread. Has anyone ever had centipedes in their house in Roanoke? Possibly moving there soon and my decision will be partly based on whether I can get away from these horrifying nightmare creatures.

There is no escape from those beasts of hell but I have had to do battle with them very, very rarely here compared to other states where I have lived.

Year 5 here and haven't seen one.

The stink bugs are bizarre looking creatures, but annoying. I used to move them outside till I learned they were an invasive species - so now I just give them a burial at sea (toilet). Our first year they were everywhere (late fall) but not so much since then.

(Don't let the pic in this link scare you away!)

We get occasional lady bugs in the house. (awww) I do relocate them, they are so cute.
