Others will pipe in with more detail - but essentially some winters go by with little or no significant snowfall. Last year was a major exception, and (along with the rest of the east coast) there were major snow-dumps throughout the winter.

Good question! January is the month for snow. Generally if a typical storm comes through it dumps around 6-8" in the valley and much more in the higher elevations. Luckily, the snow doesn't stick around very long(unless it is like last years blizzard!). The snow does melt much faster, if that is some comfort! Good Luck!

Are you asking about "snow level" in terms of altitude (i.e. snow at higher elevations, rain at lower ones)?

Or are you asking about the average depth of the snow on the ground?

How much snow does Roanoke have by January? Will we be able to get though?

How are they on clear roads after snow falls?

It's likely that there will be no snow at all. If there is snow, it will be only a day here and there. This is not the kind of area that gets tons of snow every winter. Roanoke gets "wintry mix" storms at least as often as it gets snow though, so there are days when sleet/freezing rain make driving very dangerous.

Average snowfall for Roanoke leading up to early January is about five and one-half inches.

However, like most "average" or "normal" statistics in the weather business, that figure is deceptive and in most years, probably not going to be close to what has actually occurred.
