AARP magazine recently included Roanoke as one of the "best places to live on $100 per day". Thought I would share. I also believe Forbes included Lynchburg recently in one of its lists.

Roanoke, Va.

Vibe: A bustling small city amid the magic of the Blue Ridge Mountains

Sunny days per year: 217

Median home price: $151,500

Certainly Roanoke's pleasant climate, its 22 miles of walkable/bikeable greenways and the spectacular backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains helped land the city on the list this year. So did its incredibly rich history of both Roanoke and the surrounding valley. (Notable Civil War battles include Hunter's Raid of 1864.)

But its 88.5-foot-high illuminated star, first lit in 1949, isn't the only aspect of the city that is burning brightly: Building its reputation as the "City of Festivals," the town now boasts Roanoke Festival In the Park, Downtown Roanoke's Railway Festival, Henry Street Festival, Vinton's Dogwood Festival, The Virginia Championship Chili Cook-off and the Strawberry Festival, making it one of the liveliest towns in the region.

An ambitious downtown complex combines housing with a theater, planetarium and museums. And for retirees, Roanoke also indexes below the national average for each component of the national cost-of-living index, compiled by the Council for Community and Economic Research, including groceries, utilities, health care and transportation - the only city on our list besides Omaha to do so.

Yes, we have known Roanoke and Lynchburg were special places.
I hope both communities can keep focused on our quality of life through planning for future growth as well
as providing a good economic climate for jobs, etc. We are definately poised in the right direction if we can
get our state government to recognize the potential that exists.

Roanoke would be PERFECT if the elevation was about 1000-1500ft higher. It would then have the same climate as Boone, NC.

Roanoke/SML has been on a few list in the past as "a great place to retire". I love working with the senior community around Roanoke. They all seem to be pretty happy! Some of our major industries/employers in Roanoke have to do with healthcare, so seniors being able to get quality healthcare may be a drawing point for retirees and for younger people looking for employment in the healthcare field.

The Sept/Oct issue of WHERE TO RETIRE magazine has a feature article on "15 Low-Cost Towns":

With a moving truck, savvy baby boomers are parking their spending without sacrificing their lifestyle. They're making their retirement dollars go further by relocating to more-affordable towns. We've chosen 15 stellar destinations brimming with amenities--all with a below-average cost of living and, in most cases, the added benefit of lower-than-average taxes.

Roanoke is one of the fifteen!

(The other fourteen are Biloxi MS, Fairhope AL, Palm Coast FL, Savannah GA, Myrtle Beach SC, Chattanooga TN, Greenville NC, Hot Springs AR, Paducah KY, Boise ID, Colorado Springs CO, Green Valley AZ, St. George UT, and Spokane WA.)

Funny you posted this. I thought the same thing, one day last week, when I went to the Hardees. I saw so many retirees that morning there. The cost of living is low. Crime is low. Commute is excellent. Lots of activities for retirees.

Only disadvantage is the availability of Single Family Homes that allow one floor living is tough to find for a family of four.

We are a retired couple who just arrived in Lynchburg from New Hampshire. One floor living w/o any stairs was our housing objective. We also wanted a rental for easier living/upkeep. We found very few offerings. Lots of townhouses, but few first floor rentals. We feel fortunate to have found a place even though we have about 6 steps outside the apartment to navigate.....we'll be okay......they are small steps .

Our only child lives here in Lynchburg so our move was not necessarily based on the favorable reviews of the city, but more on the acceptance that we are aging and need to be closer to our son. Everything else is a bonus!

I want to thank the posters who take the time to help out here on City Data. We posted a question about the best route to take driving a truck and towing a car. We got the answers and the trip last weekend was a breeze. I thank you all.
