I am in the Winchester area for business. What the hell is there to do out here? I'll be here for a week. Based out of Austin, TX and I'm looking for something to do. I know DC is about an hour or more out. Is there anything else closer? I wouldn't mind doing mountain range photography. What are some popular parks close to here where I can take some scenic pictures? I'm driving through this town and I'm literally hurting from the boredom. Someone please help me.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park is 30 miles which would provide a lot of scenery, etc. There are also several museums in Winchester such as Museum of the Shenandoah Valley and Stonewall Jackson's Headquarters Museum. Kernstown Battlefield and Belle Grove Plantation are close as well and have good scenery. Since you have internet, you have the ability to find out about this very historic area which is much different than Austin, TX. You should have posted this in Northern Virginia as you are a long ways away from Roanoke.

Exclamation Want scenic photos? Drive through the mountains or go underground!

Boredom can be very tedious, but it usually only happens when you don't have anything to do that interest you. So find yourself something to do that you can enjoy. You're a photography buff looking for "scenic" views? Here are a couple of quick suggestions not far from where you're staying:

In Winchester, you are only about 25 miles from Front Royal, where the "Skyline Drive" begins. It's a nice 105-mile ride through the most scenic portion of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains (part of the Appalachian chain). Sunrise over the mountains is pretty nice, especially this time of year.

And if you get tired of taking scenic mountain photography, stop off when you get to Luray, and go underground and spend a few hours down in the Luray Caverns (take a sweater, temp in the caverns tends to stay around 54º F).

Wikipedia can tell you more about these "scenic" places, at these links:

Skyline Drive - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
and
Luray Caverns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Enjoy your stay!

And the next time you're planning to come this way, you might want to give the Forum a little advance notice (and yes, you might probably want to post it in the NoVA Forum if you're coming to Winchester or anywhere near NoVA) ... because there is such a wide variety of things to do around Northern Virginia that nobody should ever have to be bored visiting anywhere in NoVA.

Greetings all,

My wife and I are heading up there next weekend to see the VA Transportation Museum and are interested in what else is happening that we can see. Are there any street festivals and such? I suspect she'll want to see the Taubman M of A as well, so I will be in need of something exciting to do after all that!

We'll be staying overnight and returning Sunday afternoon.

She's also keen on Flea Markets, antiquing, Sci-Fi, Steampunk and Indian Restaurants

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Roanoke has a lot of festivals in the summer, though I'm not aware of any during the weekend of the 15th. You could wander around the downtown farmer's market where they have something going on most Saturdays. The Taubman Museum will be very busy as a slew of new exhibitions are opening that day. I don't eat Indian Food but Nawab, near the Taubman Museum/farmer's market is supposed to be very good.

I recommend heading to Blue 5 for dinner, or for after-dinner drinks and live music.

You may want to check out the event calendars on Downtown Roanoke and Visit Roanoke websites. Enjoy your visit!

June 8-9 or 15-16??

A great stop (not exactly antiquing) but totally fascinating is Black Dog Salvage - not too far west of downtown - there salvage efforts were turned into a reality show!

It is fun just to go look!

Salvaged Mantles, Doors, Windows, Glass, Iron, Plumbing, Hardware and More

We're visiting next weekend, the 15th & 16th. Good call on the salvage as we have a Victorian house and keep an eye out for period correct items. That and she collects steampunkable things.

Regards,

Dave

The best Indian restaurant in town is Nawab, downtown across from Center in the SquareCenter in the SquareIt just recently repened and you must go to the rooftop pavilion(free)and get a birds eye view of downtown and the valley. In the lobby there is a freshwater fish tank, seahorses, jelly fish, turtles, etc. For flea markets try Happys Flea Market. It is located on Williamson Road and about a 15 minute ride from downtown. The VTM has really improved with the new exhibits. I liked the renovated passenger cars. There is one in which a movie explains the history of the steam locomotive 911. Also, if you are into railroad photography, the O.Winston Link Museum(downtown) has an awesome collection of railroading history through photography and movie.
Everything is downtown in Roanoke which is always much easier than driving around! Enjoy your stay!

Ditto on the Link Museum. Just to read about it makes it sound like a mild diversion, but it is utterly fascinating, and I will probably be going there repeatedly taking out of town guests. The photography is just amazing!
