I currently live in NE roanoke(city) and am looking to move to SW county area.. or maybe downtown and was looking for some advice. Between myself and my girlfriend we are at 60,000 a year before taxes. With our jobs we travel mon-friday which is why we would rather have an apartment instead of buying a house. Our Food, gas and lodging is taken care of Mon-Fri so we are only home for the weekends and holidays (thanksgiving week, christmas/new years etc). With all things considered I was hoping for some advice of where to look and maybe a sweet spot (price) for rent? Any advice would be appreciated.

Why rent when home prices in Roanoke city are at historic lows, mortgage interest payments have never been lower. If you plan to stay in the area for a few years it would be wise to try and buy a home now. The economy is starting to improve (we hope!)
and soon interest rates will rise, homes will increase in price. Oddly, rents on apartments will also rise. If you are away most of the week, why spend so much $$ on an expensive downtown/sw county apt with little to show for it after a few years? Why make your landlord rich? Just a thought and good luck!

We thought about buying a house, but there just isn't anytime to take care of a house at the moment.. We hope to be buying in the next 2 years, but as of right now it looks better to rent an apartment while we get everything together. We are staying in the area which to me is a big sign for roanoke since we travel and can live anywhere in the mid atlantic to keep our jobs and we want to stay here. Thanks for the advice and I'll take it into consideration!

Other than apartment buildings check with realtors such as Francis Realtors. They represent townhomes, etc in which owners are renting. Sometimes you can negotiate the price.
