Best Indian lunch buffet is Taaza. My wife doesn't like Indian food that much and was satisfied with the very wide range of choices there. I love the stuff and was happy there as well, it was comparable to anything I've had back in NY.

It fills up fast though.

Don't know about Indian but for Italian, the best I have had is Luigi's on Brambleton. Everything is made fresh to order and their Clams Casino are to die for. High dollar but great food.

We were walking to Cedars and right before that is an Indian place....we checked the menu and decided to check that out instead. It was amazingly delicious!
Cant wait to try the rest of these places!

Local Roots is hands-down my favorite restaurant in Roanoke. However, I only end up eating there a few times a year due to (a) the expense and (b) the difficulty of convincing others to come with me. Not that it's necessarily hugely expensive, I just lose all self-restraint when I go in there--first, have to do the flight of what's on the taps (Beer Club), then there is usually at least one really interesting new appetizer to try, main course, dessert, probably a glass of wine, beer, or creative cocktail with my meal. What I love about Local Roots is that they are creative/experimental but yet sensitive to what actually tastes good. What I mean is I've been to a few 'foodie' places that seem to pride themselves on challenging your palate with strong, even off-putting tastes and textures, and it's just too much. That was my experience with River and Rail--too much pickled this and smoked that on the menu. I am consistently amazed at how expertly, and non-abrasively, some genuinely creative ingredient pairings mesh at Local Roots. I remember having a berry 'gazpacho' there that had blue cheese and bacon in it. Sounds awful/weird, right? But I was like, "These ingredients were made to be together!" I've had that experience MANY times at Local Roots. Sure, their local food mission and nearby garden are awesome, but what makes it my favorite is that I always come away from there feeling like they truly love, and understand, food. But see, I'm a total nerd--I love to think about EVERYTHING, and Local Roots will inspire you to think about food. That's not what some people want, and I respect that. It's not always what I want, either. Sometimes a simple steak or bowl of pasta suits just fine.

Another local favorite is Ben Gui. Boyfriend and I are regulars there. We recently had an awesome experience at Lucky, after it had been recommended to me more than once. I like Taaza, but haven't been there in a while. Never tried Nawab--is that where you went? Haven't been to/tried Cedars yet either.

You totally sold me on Local Roots! I will try it soon. The berry gazpacho sounds amazing!
I think it was Nawab that I went to; it was amazing Indian food- very authentic and the best white rice I have ever had (I know that is weird to say, but usually, to me, rice is just a filler food).

I've also not yet tried 1906 but I think I will check it out this week.

I wish my daughter would come to visit more often so that I could try more places! I am not opposed to dining alone, but it gets old pretty quickly

There is a group on Meetup.com called Roanoke Dining Enthusiasts, or something along those lines. They could introduce you to some of the good area restaurants, and you wouldn't have to dine alone.

I wish I would receive comment notification/emails!

CapsChick I have checked out a couple of groups on Meetup, I just have to get myself out of my comfort zone to be able to go to one:-) I can get quite insecure when walking in to new things...I know i can do it, I just need to get myself to do it!

I had the same feeling and only ventured out a couple of times but most groups typically want new members and are very welcoming! If you like to cook, a friend of mine started the Roanoke Cooking Chicks meetup group and it has a bunch of fun ladies. She has since moved away but it is carrying on with a new admin.
