I'm looking for living expense info for this area, no specific area yet.
I'm living in Watertown,NY now and overall cost of living seems comparable for both areas.
Trying to find info on heating, electric, internet, water/sewer etc....
I have a 2BR house now around 1000 SQ Ft and would like to find something similar under $100,000.00.
At this time I have;
gas heat/ electric $125/month
water/sewer $65 every 3 months
Internet $45/month
trash $50/ every 3 months
This is for a single person.
I'll be retiring in 5-10 years and can get by on a $10/hour job if I need to.
Trying to stay within 60 miles of VA hospital in Salem since I use VA healthcare.
Also dog friendly needed. I saw on Salem website dogs are not allowed in parks even on a leash??
Thanks

Without being specific I would say Watertown and Roanoke are in the same ballpark on expenses.
The power company Appalachian Power has budget plans that seem to work better cost wise.
Salem is a very nice town, if you can find a home for $100k. Roanoke City is best known for its many parks.
People in neighboring towns drive to Roanoke City to take advantage of its parks. Salem has some beautiful walking areas adjacent to the river especially in west Salem.

Salem doesn't seem to be a dog friendly area or am I wrong?

Salem has a dog park. Dogs are allowed at the Salem Red Sox games for Bark in the Park nights. There are several dog-friendly establishments in Salem.

Ok thanks. I was looking at parks info and saw something about dogs not allowed even on leashes.
I've seen dogs behaving better than some kids lol

$45 a month will not get you Internet service from Cox. Many addresses in the city of Roanoke have Cox as the Internet provider. I believe Salem is served by Comcast which is a positive. I've had service with Comcast and Verizon in other homes without issues or complaints. Cox is horrible to deal with.

Good luck to the OP.

From what I’ve seen here it’s mostly gas for heating and hot water.

Are most houses built on slabs or do they have basements?
