I did not create this video. Roanoke is listed in here and do you believe it unfair? I'm sure when the stats are mentioned it only refers to the city and fails to mention Roanoke is much bigger than just the city. Fair assessment or not?

Nick Johnson is a serial Youtuber who creates these "lists" videos (best places, worst places, etc). He's a no-nothing who seeks clicks. Half the footage used in his videos aren't even accurate (talking about Roanoke, showing footage of Asheville, as an example). He sources Wikipedia for his "facts". He's lazy in his craft and should be avoided.

Tip: Anytime you seek "best of" or :worst of" info on Youtube, it will be from one of these kinds of creators, or from realtors; neither of whom will give you accurate info.

Have you called him out if he is using video of locations not the same as what he is claiming?

The wife and I will probably check out Roanoke as a potential retirement location. Trying to research candidates is really hard because I can find such widely varying opinions. In another thread, someone linked to a negative review about another one we're considering, Knoxville TN:

Naturally, I found one saying the opposite.

Ultimately all we can really do is go check it out for ourselves, I guess.

This guy has a video for virtually every town in every state...

He probably couldn't point out any of these towns on a map.

There is good and bad everywhere and you need to do some research that you know is not bias as well as have your own priority list and knowing up front what kind of neighborhood/area you can afford and be looking to purchase.

Every area will have its own pluses and minuses!

Have you looked at Lexington a little north of Roanoke? Smaller town with great charm and in a beautiful area. Regardless of this guy and his assessment of Roanoke I much prefer towns like Lexington or Staunton. Smaller but more than large enough for me. Roanoke has grown so much that I just prefer less traffic and so on. Plus one major plus we've found living in the Shenandoah Valley is the personal touch at places like hospitals. My wife kept a Dr in NOVA so a recent mammogram was scheduled in a hospital there and she needed to reschedule. She called twice and left messages and no one called back after two days. She finally got in touch with someone and they offered to transfer to someone who could help. Right back to the number she already called. Out here I have called hospitals in Harrisonburg, Woodstock and Winchester and talked to a person every single time. To me this is invaluable. Not sure if things in Roanoke are like NOVA or here in the valley.

And no. My wife never got the mammogram rescheduled as they never called back.

We've just started our retirement search as well - we're about 5 years out but want enough time to visit a few candidates (and the finalists hopefully more than once). We've got an exploratory trip to Roanoke scheduled for next month (our first). It definitely pays to do some research since there is no one place that is perfect for everyone, and as you note there is conflicting information - some of it good intentioned (someone who genuinely doesn't like a location because of his or her personal priorities, and someone else who loves the same place because of his or her specific situation), bad intentioned (trolling, trying to keep one's area lower population, etc.) and lazy (as some have accused this YouTuber of being).
