I am Asian and I will get an offer from Advance Auto Part soon. I am wondering how diversified Roanoke is and how many Asians there. I don't want my son to be the only Asian in his class.

Answer: Not very. Both city high schools are 2% Asian, for example.

You may want to consider living in Blacksburg. It has a much higher Asian population.

There was just shy of 4,000 Asians living in the Roanoke metro area in 2006. Our girls go to a private secular school called North Cross which is in Roanoke. At North Cross, 15% are children of color. More information can be found at:

North Cross School ~ School Facts & Stats

Oddly enough upon checking that page myself, I notice my daughter is pictured there with her best friend, who is of Vietnamese descent. Another of her close friends is of Indian descent. Private school tuition at North Cross is about 33% of the cost of a comparable New England private school so its certainly worth looking into.

Roanoke is diverse, but people pretty much stay on their side of the county or city line. Where we live in North Lakes is nice because there are a number of other races (blacks and asians), and everyone gets along. Now in S.W. my family got some dirty looks from people when we were looking at houses.
