I've spent hours reading the various posts on moving to Roanoke, so I hope not to repeat too much. We would be moving from Colorado (great weather, yes snow, but 300 days of sunshine a year, with very low humidity), possibly by the end of the year, beginning of next year. I've already decided on the area, probably southwest Roanoke, Cave Springs area. Our kids are grown, so schools are not important, but I realize that good schools help with property value. I currently love to play tennis, and play year round, indoor courts in the winter, outdoors in the summer. I used to play quite frequently, but now only play once a week, but in the summers I play on USTA teams, level 3.5 womens. So I was wondering where would be the best place to play tennis, find a league/team to play on, for fun and competition.

Also, wondering about grocery stores, we have King Soopers here, which is Kroger's in your area, but how about specialty grocery stores? We have Whole Foods, no Trader Joes (I used to live in California). How about Costco?

What are the local department stores? Any high end stores?

Thanks in advance for your help.

If your budget is > $500K for a home then I know of a house soon to go on the market in the Roanoke city area. Friends of ours have regrettably moved back to Colorado Springs from Roanoke to accept a job offer. They didn't want to leave but the position he had here (skin pathologist) didn't have a teaching opportunity so they moved on. The house is beautiful and is in the old southwest city area of Roanoke. I believe it has 4 bedrooms, with a very nice backyard. It's on Richelieu Ave if you want to google map it. A very attractive house that was renovated around '03. You can private message me here and I can put you in touch if you're interested.

As for tennis, I believe the best center is Sun Tennis:

As for specialty grocery stores, there is the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op:

And also the Fresh Market:

The Fresh Market - Experience the Food!

And Ukrops:

Ukrop's Super Markets

Not sure about Costco but isn't there a SAMS Club near the airport?

Department store lists:

Store Directory Alphabetical - Valley View Mall (http://www.valleyviewmall.com/shop/valleyview.nsf/storedir_all - broken link)
Tanglewood Mall - Roanoke, Virginia (http://shoptanglewood.com/storelisting.htm - broken link)

Lots of high end stores also. Beyond the chains there are great specialty boutiques like The Cobbler's Wife, etc.

Hi Sean -thanks for your reply, I will check out the links you gave me. Our buying a house will be dependent on us selling our house here, so we might have to rent a while if our house doesn't sell in this slow market.

Coincidentally, we would be moving from Colorado Springs.
