My family will be moving to Roanoke in a couple of months. My wife will be a floating pharmacist and will have to cover mostly Roanoke, but also Salem and Christiansburg. We were looking for areas most amenable to her commute, but it is very difficult to figure out where to live. We are looking for safe neighborhood with good commute to the surrounding area without traffic. Any inputs? BTW, we will be looking to rent.

Roanoke and Salem are next to each other. Christiansburg is 40 minutes south on I81 or US460. Glenvar is the outer Rke Valley area between Rke/Salem and Christiansburg. Might be a target area to start.

Thanks! I have been looking for rentals and there does not seem that many out there. Are there sites other than craigslist that I may find rental properties?

Actually, I think the Grandin/Raleigh Court area might be the best place for you...if you can stand the liberal, progressive, hippy, obama voter people...as you are right in the middle of Roanoke and can hop on the Interstate to Salem then Christiansburg...

I would say Salem over all. Commute to points south of the Roanoke valley can be cut in half by living in western Salem with access to 81. Still it is very much a part of Roanoke valley. Not too many complexes in Salem however and the only one I have experience with is Salem wood. Very good neighborhood but an older one as is the complex. Still well kept though

My family recently moved to Roanoke after my husband joined a dental practice out here. I wanted to rent a house and I was looking in the South Roanoke area. It is hard to find good rental homes out there. We ended up renting just outside of Hollins. The location isn't what we wanted but the house was what we were looking for since we have young kids. We are looking to buy a house in Daleville after this lease is up. That seems to be the direction everything is moving. Since Roanoke isn't a huge city, you don't have the rental management companies you would find in a bigger city. We were lucky that we found a realtor who was willing to work with us. He had a lot of contacts on houses that were for sale and were willing to rent.

We got desperate and I went to Realtor.com and looked for houses that were empty and had been on the market for over a year. I thought they might be willing to rent. It is worth a try! I would still recommend what everyone else has recommended and look to rent in Salem or the Southern area. I don't have tons of knowledge on the cities since I am a recent transplant, but those areas were and still are appealing to us! Everyone says everything is 20 minutes away and I have found that for the most part, that is true.

Good Luck to you!

Raleigh Court is a really nice area...I think Salem is getting gross, personally (I live in Salem). Salem is very safe (just a little boring). I don't think the area around the airport is very safe, though.
