I recently moved back to Rochester and will be traveling occasionally to Albany for work. I can't find any direct flights there, so wondering what the easiest way to get there is. It's a long drive and an even longer train ride, so looking for something quicker and curious what most people do since I would imagine plenty of people make this trip. Any advice would be appreciated.
I do this trip a lot for either work or to visit friends. 3 hours and 15 minutes to 3 and a half hours tops for driving. Nothing too bad. The train is very slow. I doubt you would find a fight since the cities are semi close together.
Driving is the best bet.
Agree with above poster - your only practical option is to drive. Best to live somewhere on the southeast side of Rochester area where you can quickly get to Thruway (Rt 90), i.e., Victor area.
Even the bus service between Albany and the R O C is terrible. Sorry, dude, the drive isn't that bad, it's straight I-90. Plenty of rest stops and Turning Stone gambling inbetween.
I used to always take the train to Albany and I loved it. It takes around 4 hours, but being able to work, sleep, or relax instead of making that boring drive is worth it to me. It is always interesting looking out the window at the back of businesses where the tracks run (vs. the street side) and seeing the stuff you never see, like groups taking smoking breaks, weird things stored behind buildings, and my favorite...the train the carnival workers live on stopped at the State Fair.
If you're just going occasionally, the drive is absolutely fine. You're going away from Erie so it rarely gets the severe weather you find on the western end of the 90, it's fairly scenic and you are going highway speeds the whole way. I've done there-and-back in one day multiple times a week in the past with no burn out.
