Hi- We are supposed to relocate to Rochester shortly. I was hoping someone could tell me a Nice and Safe area to live in?? I work with someone who was from the area and they said Rochester has a very high crime rate . We have a 9 yr old son who has learning disablities. I am thinking of buying so Re-Sale value if necessary would be important. Thanks for any input you could give me. I'd prefer a town close to shopping etc.

P.S. We are a gay couple not sure if that matters on the area or not.

Well, yes, certain areas of the city proper are very dangerous, but the suburbs are very safe. There are also some very nice neighborhoods that are safe in the city itself too. The only problem with the really nice areas of the city (the Park Avenue area, which has a relatively high gay population) is that they are still in the struggling city school district, while just over the line in the suburbs, the schools are excellent. If you want good schools, anywhere in monroe county outside of the city proper would be great, if you can afford private school.....you can get a beautiful turn of the century house in a very nice area of the city (any of the neighborhoods in the southeastern quadrant of the city) with lower taxes and at a steal of a price. The median home price in greater Rochestester is only $137,000..... so no matter where you are in the metro area, your money will go WAY farther than in NJ. I would suggest Brighton for your family. It's probably the most liberal of Rochester's suburbs, very safe, and has some of the best schools in the state. It also has some of the nice old houses (moslty tudors) like in the city, but they will be a little more expensive ( $200k +)and have higher taxes. I am also moving back to Rochester in the near future from NC.
