I hope that isn't the case, but given all of Tiger's "mis-adventures" lately, I'd wonder if he's still as big a spectator draw as he used to be. Looking back, some of the past's "greats" like Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, etc, all saw their games fade away, over time, but they still carried on with a sense of dignity, and still would draw a crowd. Tiger's life, on the other hand, has somewhat become fodder for the 'National Enquirer'.
It is true that he won’t be playing, said he needs more time to heal from injuries. His celebrity brought tons of new real and casual fans to golf, many of which otherwise had no interest in the sport. I fondly recall 2 of my aunts in their 70’s and 80’s at the time tuning in to watch his every match and calling each other on the phone whenever he was up. The one in Rochester wanted to attend the Ryder Cup when he was supposed to play. Neither of them had even a passing interest in golf previously, and then here they were sometimes missing or skipping out of church early to see “that kid” as they used to call him.
The 2nd part of my post got cut out for some reason, but here it is:
Nonetheless, the PGA championship should be a big deal and much needed boon for the region. I did hear it is expected to draw 225,000 and 6,000 hotel rooms are booked at an average rate of $350/ night for 2- 3 nights, and this just scratches the surface.
Rochester is definitely a golf city! It might interest folks to know that Oak Hill holds the distinction as the only U.S. golf course to have hosted all 6 rotating men’s golf championships.

I believe I read where he had surgery on his ankle, so won't be playing. Keep in mind that some also dislike him too.
Well there are those that dislike him, I have no feelings one way or the other. I wanted to make the point that he was able to transform golf and take it to unprecedented levels of popularity. I could have never imagined anything or anyone distracting my elderly aunts from church (they were both pillars of their respective churches). For that to occur spoke volumes to me about his impact on the sport.
He does still manage to draw big crowds and significantly increase TV ratings.
Personally, I’ve never cared for golf and never will. I’m a sports fanatic though, and will certainly be watching playoff hoops instead. However, I sincerely hope the tournament provides a much needed jolt to the local economy.
$200m estimated economic impact? Wow. Going to have to read that article, apparently, hah
I went with my buddy to Oakmont outside Pittsburgh for the US Open a few years ago. I'm not a big golf guy, to play or watch, but it was a cool experience

If the numbers are correct, that works out to about $900 per spectator. Makes sense when you add hotel room(s) ticket(s) meals, entertainment, suverneers, sight seeing, etc. Not to mention the big bucks, that corporations spend to wine and dine clients.
Hey, 250,000 spectators. Maybe Rochester could host the Superbowl.

With what stadium? Seriously though, do people actually notice a big difference in traffic due the event?
