I'm looking at buying a 2 family house in the city of Rochester, one unit for me and one to rent.

The house has battery-operated smoke detectors, but I've heard hard-wired smoke detectors are needed. Is that correct?

We bought our home in the summer. All the smoke detectors are battery operated. There is one carbon monoxide detector that is a plug-in. Best bet is to call city hall and ask.

My insurance mandated hard-wired smoke detectors in my rental units. They were not that hard to install if you know a little about electrical wiring. They weren't very expensive either.

I'm assuming you are a little bit handy, if you're buying a duplex...
