People that have small mini farms or larger. What sort of security do you have in place when you leave for the grocery or are going to be gone for a couple of days? I am looking for a small mini farm but how can I prevent my chickens, goats, etc. from being taken while I am gone ? Thanks

No idea where you're looking but is crime prevalent there? Never heard of someone stealing animals around here.

Dogs may do it for you. If my dog doesn't know you, it would be best if you didn't get close. Most are smart enough to avoid getting out of the vehicle until I call off the dog.

If you have an extra vehicle, place it near the barn to make it look like you're around and working.

It's hard to stop someone who really wants into the barn but game or security cameras may at least provide evidence of the event and culprits.

If you have the means, regular shooting also lets people within ear range know that you have a bit more capabilities.

^^^^Ditto all of that.

I live on what some people might refer to as a Deliverance Road, yet most folks are still farmers and probably don't even lock their doors when they go to bed at night.

The only things stealing goats and chickens around here would be the coyotes.

We have a locked gate at the bottom of the drive. We have big dogs. We have guns. I have an intercom system at the horse barn.

If you have to leave for a few days, surely you have someone who is feeding your chickens and goats while you're gone? Them coming in and out would add to the confusion of whether or not someone is home.

You could also buy and set up wild game cameras. That way if your critters were to go missing, it would be on film, when you filed the police report.

Of all the places a house breaker might want to rob an freestanding farm is about the last because the farmers have been around for a while and know how to defend themselves and their property. This has not eliminated cattle rustling as a profession in many places.

If you're going to be gone for an extended amount of time, don't tell anybody. Word gets around.

but if she's going to be gone the mail has to be stopped and critters still have be tended.

Don't do your shopping the same time every week.

Move the extra vehicle to a different spot.

My bet would be that your chickens and etc. need to be "secured" more from coyotes/fox/snakes/minks (or whatever varmints are common in central Florida) than from people. Although Florida is very overpopulated by humans, so who knows. A couple of dogs is always a good idea if you have the time, money and ability to care for them properly.

I was just thinking today that I haven't locked my house in over a year . . . I'm not even sure where my house keys are. I guess I should try to find them.

I also like the idea of the game cameras around.. But if you're not there you can't shoot !!!! That's my security...
