My mom is 95 and lives outside a smaller town of 18k. She is on 5 acres living by herself 10 minutes from this small town. It is peaceful yet convenient. She is 30 miles from two Texas towns of 60k and a little over an hour from DFW a metro of 7.5M so all is not too far but she is a nice peaceful place with a very nice growing town near by her with Dr's and hospital. There is a small state university in town which has a lot of plays and musical events and the casino 10 minutes from here has even more entertainment. She is happy there and will drive herself around in town but not on the road to the large places.

This is a tough one for me. I love small towns/small town living, but I also love the country life, having a lot of property for dogs to run, have bonfires, shooting, farm life, etc. It depends on the town, if it's one of those "everybody knows everybody" towns, than I'd probably choose in town, if I could find a place with a nice yard. If it's just a small town, but not everybody knows everybody, or I was more into the farming lifestyle, than in-country for sure.

Quality of life is inversely related to population density.

I think there is a Thomas Jefferson quote to that effect. I agree, I can put up with whoever so long as they are not too close.
