I am a transplant in a small city and find it hard to cope. The wages are low so you don't make enough to move out quickly unless you have family or friends support. Every time I go to an event nobody shows up because the locals don't go unless it is family. Look for suggestions on how to live in a small city until I can make it to a bigger one. I don't fit in and I have tried no kids and single which is not common in these places.

You already know what to do, you're just not doing it.
Make yourself more employable to earn more money.

Focus on working as many hours as you can and saving as much money as you can. Keep your eye on the prize - as you said, to get out of the place. I work in a small town and have been there for many years; I, too, have found it very difficult to make friends. So, I quit trying. I go home when I can - where I have friends. When I am stuck in that small town on weekends, I either work or take a road trip elsewhere. There is always something interesting to see/do. There are ways to manage where you are. Remember that nothing has to be permanent.

I've lived in a small town all my life (so far!). Every small town has a bigger city as a "hub" where everybody goes to find something to do. That is where the mall is, more places to eat, concerts, drinks, etc. Might have to get outside the city limits occasionally. I used to live in a town of 2000 that has a big motorcycle rally every year. At one time they had 25,000 bikers. One of them asked me what we do for fun on weekends in a town that small. He laughed when I told him "We leave!"
