Can I leave chicks I am brooding for 8 days alone? I am around for 8 weeks with the exception of one week gone.

It's risky to leave brooder chicks alone for a week, even with enough food and water. I'm guessing they are going to be a few weeks old when you're planning to leave. The thing about brooder chicks is they are twice as much work as chicks hatched by a hen. Chicks I've raised are more delicate than the husky little things raised outside with a hen. Until they get bigger, indoor chicks are very fragile. The area that brooder chicks are in, needs to be kept clean or they can quickly get sick, they need clean water and they love to mess it up, a working source of heat is a must. The mom takes care of all these things, but if you raise them, it's a lot of work. I wouldn't advise leaving them alone unless you have someone come in and check on them and make sure they have plenty of food, working heat, clean water and brooder box.

If you can, put it off until they are with the big hens..
