Slightly off-topic, after the emu market collapsed, a local farmer was selling chicks for a couple dollars each. I did my research. By the time they are fed up to be big enough to butcher, it is some extremely expensive meat. They grow slowly and need a high protein food. You feed them for a long time without getting much meat in return.
So, even if they are free, it isn't worth raising them.
Really far off topic, after the llama market collapsed, llamas were given away for free. I took one because they are supposed to be good sheep guardians. Well this one was terrified of dogs and killed the lambs. So I had it butchered.
Don't do that. Llama meat is nasty stuff. It tastes like a camel smells. It is inedible, although I was able to get the dogs to eat it., But the dogs will eat road kill so they aren't picky about meat.
I didn't know llamas and alpacas were a fad as well. It seems the only "exotic" meat that has taken off to an extent is bison huh?
I just remember being able to afford some ostrich meat in college. It wasn't bad but I figured the market must have collapsed if a college student could afford it.
I remember that fad. My Uncle was pretty excited about it but luckily he never pursued it. I did see a couple of places raising them back in the day.
Are they all out of business now? I remember seeing a billboard advertising it and it noting investors on it. I wonder how many people did and lost their asses on it.

That's funny as hell.
