Hi,

My husband and I are moving to Sacramento in one month and we are considering renting a house in Newton Booth on T street, nearer to Poverty Ridge. I have read a bit about that area on this forum already. But I still do not have a clear picture of what that area is like. From Google street view T street (near 25th) looks like a bit of a hodge podge with charming historic homes right next to less appealing apartment complexes or commercial sites. I cannot quite figure out whats going on here.

Can anyone give me an idea of what we might be in for if we decide to move to Newton Booth? As far as, what sort of people populate the area. Is it safe to walk around?

Thanks!

Pretty much exactly what you said: a hodgepodge of charming historic homes and newer apartment buildings. There are still industrial buildings along R Street (a phone company facility, electrical supply, a tile company, and construction supply warehouses) along with brand-new loft apartments and condos. Another former building on R Street builds custom bicycles, and shares space with a custom corsetmaker and a couple of graphic artists. There is a fantastic coffee shop, an urban winery/wine bar, tattoo studio and specialty cake bakery at 29th and S, and a dive bar (the Round Corner) at 24th and S.

Generally, if you're the kind of person who goes to a buffet and takes a little bit of everything, you'll like Newton Booth and the central city in general. There's a little bit of everything here.

It's generally pretty quiet and comfortable, compared to slightly more bustling Midtown, but Midtown is a short walk away, as are the growing number of dining and arts destinations along R Street, plus you're closer to the cornucopia of culinary awesomeness along Broadway and the Natural Foods Co-Op on Alhambra and S. It's quite safe to walk around. Ethnically it is very mixed. A bit east into Poverty Ridge is where the bigger and more expensive houses are.

The crazy swastika guy is over on 24th and U, I think.

Haha, oh dear, no it is not next to the "crazy guy", who seems to be causing quite a stir. It is a rental on T street near 25th. Although, I bet that guy is quite close to where I am thinking of renting. I wouldn't mind renting in Poverty Ridge but haven't found any listings. Anyway, thank you very much for your information. One never really knows until they are there, I suppose.

much appreciated, thanks.
