Hey all!

So, my partner and I finally moved in earlier this week after a much anticipated move to downtown Sac from Louisville KY. Since I don't know anyone in this city, I thought I'd come online for local opinions. I need to get us some groceries but I have no clue where to go! Neither of the stores I frequented in Kentucky are here (big surprise) so where do you go for groceries? I usually go to a regular, middle-of-the-line place for packaged food and a nicer place (or farmers market in the summer) for produce and meat. Also, are there any farmers markets that go on year-round? My neighbors told me that I missed the nearest one by just a couple weeks (open May-Oct) which was a big bummer.

Any way, thanks for any suggestions you have on groceries or just life in Sac in general.

Winco is great. Also it's been a while since I lived there but the Bel-Air markets used to have takeout Chinese food that came in real handy on a busy evening. Enjoy Sacramento! It's definitely under-rated.

The farmer's market under the W-X freeway near Southside Park is the biggest one in town, close to downtown, and open year-round. That's where we buy pretty much all of our produce, eggs, and occasionally meat. As NoirFemme mentioned, WinCo is great. They're out in the 'burbs, so we try to hit it when we're on the way from somewhere else--there's one in Vacaville, Elk Grove, Roseville, Folsom and a few other spots, so there's one not too far from most other potential destinations. On a day-to-day basis, I'll snag stuff from Grocery Outlet or Safeway in midtown/downtown.

Congrats on the move. Hope you enjoy the city.

The most convenient grocery stores from downtown Sacramento are probably the aforementioned Midtown Grocery Outlet and the Safeway at 19th and S Street. The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op is on Alhambra and S Street, another Safeway on Alhambra and K Street. There is a Target that sells groceries on Broadway and Riverside, and north of downtown is a wholesale grocery on Richards and North 10th Street, Cash & Carry, that sells to the general public. In addition to the Sunday farmer's market, apparently the Midtown farmer's market on 20th & J Street, held on Saturday mornings, will also be year round.

There are a couple of smaller central city markets worth visiting, including Italian Importing on J and 19th and the Asian food market on Broadway and 13th. There are a couple of other small Asian specialty stores in Southside Park, like the Japanese mochi bakery on 10th and V and the Taiwanese food store two doors down, and a couple of smaller Asian grocery stores on 16th between V and S Street (mostly Chinese items with some Japanese.)

Middle of the road here would be Safeway, Bel-Air, Raleys, Sprouts

Nicer would be Nugget & Whole Foods

discount/bulk: Costco, Sam's, Walmart, Target, Winco
