Hi, I'm considering buying a house in Northgate and would like to know peoples opinions of the area. The house looks well maintained and is in my price range, but have searched the forums and have seen people call it a "slum". Exactly how dangerous are we talking here? I have had my car broken into twice in Woodland and have grown accustomed to locking my apartment door and windows, along with locking my car doors and keeping valuables inside my home, would locking my house doors/windows, and garaging my cars suffice?

I also have a sister who is aged 17 and we like to walk our dogs (Chihuahuas), would we run the risk of being robbed at gun point? I'm pretty street smart and know not to mess with sketchy looking people and have learned from living in Woodland to not wear blue but in comparison to where I come from (Lake County, and now Woodland) I seem to be more worried about our safety (our being me and my family) with the knowledge that Northgate is considered a slum.

I had heard before that Woodland was a sketchy town but I've walked around fine for 3 years, and am not worried about my safety here. But it sounds like Northgate is a whole different level of sketch.

So I just want to hear peoples opinions and I will take them into account when deciding whether or not to buy in Northgate, I will be going out to see a house this week and will try to gauge whether or not I feel safe just walking around the neighborhood. Thank you.

I think Woodland is better than Northgate. There are little pockets of nice areas, but most of it is not nice. Several of my foster kids lived in that area and I HATED dropping them off for visits with their families. There are a lot of transitional housing apartments in that area. Drug rehabs too. Of course my kids all had parents in those places. You really have to check it out for yourself and see if you can deal with that. For fun, you should go to the Foods Co on Northgate on a Saturday afternoon. It makes Winco look tame.

My experience was the daily commute on Northgate Blvd back in 2005/2006, so since I didn't actually live there....my opinion may not be helpful.

As long as you have thoroughly researched the area (crime maps, drive thru neighborhood and surrounding area at all hours, during the week & weekends)....When you visit the house, go for a walk. I would also suggest walking down Northgate Blvd and checking out the little stores along the way.

What about the houses west of the 5? Opposite Arco. Would those be safe(r)?

Check the crime stats for yourself.

I have shown homes in Natomas, in the area West of 5. Though I didn't spend a lot of time there, I felt safe there, and my clients had lived there before and felt safe moving back there. I didn't feel that way in Northgate, I won't go there by myself anymore.
