Think of how San Leandro got and still gets spill over problems from Oakland, but the difference between the two cities was and is still stark.
The Elk Grove Unified School District also stretches into South Sacramento. Valley High is in the Sacramento city limits and is also in a terrible neighborhood. Florin High and Sheldon High have Sacramento addresses and pull most of their students from South Sac. Monterey Trail also pulls a big chunk or their students from South Sacramento, even tho it sits right at the Northern border of Elk Grove.

Even if you put in the qualifier that the rest of EG is OK school-wise, it is still not even close to Roseville on that count either, if you pull out the students whom unfortunately come from households and neighborhoods where education is not valued in the same way by many people as it is in more affluent areas.

Ok so Roseville is nicer than Elk Grove, I don't think anybody is arguing the contrary. That doesn't mean Elk Grove is not a nice place.

Elk Grove is a piece of garbage and will continue to decline due to the preference of urban areas now. Midtown and outer grid neighborhoods are now more attractive and draw more people/development than the suburban garbage that elk grove still produces. Elk grove is one big failed city that is built on an outdated 1950's suburban model.

Wow, just like that. With one or two savagely penned sentences you just thrust down an entire area and give it NO HOPE.

Throw-away, huh? But not everyone has your preference of urban/midtown areas. Your calling it garbage will not change the fact that many people like suburbia.

But I do know the social engineers of our state despise suburbia and want to cram more people into high-rises. Hope that backfires. Not that there is anything wrong with urban living but let people have their choices.

May Elk Grove survive and prosper!

mrsltd, Majin is just trolling for angry responses. Nobody is trying to cram people into high-rises, there are plenty of people who already want to live downtown, just as there are plenty of people who want to live in the suburbs--from the surveys I have seen, each represents about a third of the population, and the other third is willing to live wherever their commute to work will be more convenient.

Ah yes, the wishful delusions of childless "new urbanist" types. People don't want to raise kids in the inner city, without yards.

Although I do fully appreciate how the new inner city of entertainment venues, bars, nightclubs and boutiques is undeniably better than the old inner city slums. Not everybody wants to have a wife/husband and kids. Sacramento is big enough to have a neighborhood of gays, DINKs, students, and young still singles.

Good to know. His/her posts seem to follow a theme, though: Downtown and Mid-town Sacramento are "it"; everything else sucks.

I imagine Elk Grove and most everything else in the Sacramento area outside of the grid "suck" for this person.

It's pretty close... If you compare SAT scores for comparable schools (for better or for worse SAT scores are important for college admissions) there isn't much difference. But I would agree that school performance differs between affluent areas and other areas. Elk Grove is a much larger school district and encompasses affluent and non affluent areas to a larger degree than Roseville so performance varies quite a bit between schools depending on location.

Elk Grove

Pleasant Grove High 1598

Franklin High 1542

Roseville

Oakmont High 1606

Woodcreek High 1555

EG is for people who cannot afford Roseville. As a result, you've got a huge Indian presence. Sadly though, this area is too close and convenient to the gang neighborhoods, so it's the last place I would buy in.
