What's the job market like? Is there a lot of jobs? Hard to find, etc..

If you're a lobbyist, it's great.

The Sacramento region has several concentrated centers of employment. Since Sacramento is the state capital, government plays a significant role in the local economy. Most state government offices are located in the downtown area although several offices are located in the suburbs such as the Franchise Tax Board near Rancho Cordova along the US-50 corridor. The suburban cities of Rancho Cordova, Folsom and Roseville have a number of employment centers, including some IT-related industries. There are a number of customer service call centers in Rancho Cordova. Unfortunately, no Fortune 500 companies are headquartered here but the private sector is fairly diverse. It all depends on your background and what you're looking for. The economy is not as booming as the Bay Area/Silicon Valley but it's doing better than other locales in the Central Valley. I would check out the Sacramento Business Journal (Sacramento Business News - Sacramento Business Journal) to get a feel for the local economy.

We were just notified today that there will be a huge layoff of staff over the next 6 months as services are outsourced overseas. It's clinical staff being cut now, but all departments will be experiencing this.

You all think you hate big business healthcare now, just wait until the offshore folk start handling your care.

I believe that. Years ago I took my mom to a hospital where they did a scan and sent the data electronically to India for analysis. Nurses and assistant nurses from the Philippine have coming and working here for years.

To the OP question:

If you want job security and a comfortable living while doing little, a good job is one where your salary comes other people's taxes. This city has a lot of those government jobs. Most of my relatives have these jobs.

Good information, thanks. I would be more looking for product support, IT support, recruiting (possibly), those kind of jobs. I would like to be close to midtown and downtown If possible. Do you feel there is a decent amount of jobs there? I mean of course the bay area/silicon valley has tremendous opportunities, but I don't care for MAJOR cities or to pay those kinds of living expenses. Sacramento cost of living is much more doable.

Based upon your background and interest, I would inquire with the major medical centers such as Sutter, Mercy (Dignity), and UC Davis Medical Center. These facilities have major campuses located near Downtown/Midtown Sacramento. There are a growing number of start-ups in Midtown. I would also check out companies located in the Point West area near Cal Expo just northeast of Downtown. Kaiser has offices in Point West.
