Hotpads.com is great, as well as hitting up some property management sites. My cousin is a property manager and generally can look out for units prior to listing them for clients I know wanting to rent instead of purchase.

Depends on what part of town you're looking for, but yes, real estate agencies for rentals are pretty much unknown here. Searches online, or, if you're looking for a cheap place in Midtown, biking around and looking for FOR RENT signs, are the preferred methods.
