Time to mooooove on.
You truly don't get it on all sorts of levels.

The Writer and Director of Ladybird was born and raised in Sacramento and she purposely wanted to make a movie about Sacramento. It's not just set in Sacramento its about her life in Sacramento. It's a Love Letter to Sacramento.

She plans on making several more movies not only set in Sacramento but about Sacramento.

By the way, get your jabs in order, because another movie coming soon is set in Sacramento and in the Sierra Foothills just east of Sacramento, titled "Traffik"

I thought Lady Bird was great. But as someone who has lived in the northeast his whole life I struggled to understand how anyone who lives in sunny California could ever want to come to this cold, gray, rainy, snowy part of the world. I would have ended the movie by having her stop by an In N Out and experience a life altering epiphany over an Animal Style burger: "Oh wait....New York sucks. I'd rather be bored in Sacramento than excited in NYC".

Granted....."Sacramento is the midwest of California". And granted, part of her desire to get away seems to be about getting away from her depressive, negative mother, but still! Did I mention it's sunnier?

American Graffiti is very similar. Richard Dreyfuss escapes the confining box that is Modesto to go to college back east and eventually live in Canada. But WHY!? Have a popsicle with Wolfman Jack and reconsider!

Podcast with Greta Gerwig, Soairse Ronan, and Bil Simmons on The Ringer talk about the "Sacramen-o" accent.
But I don't think Irish born Saroise Ronan realizes that's just an American accent. Everyone pronounces it that way. And drops T's on a lot of words.

Finally saw the movie and this line keeps running thru my head "Do I look like I'm from Sacramento?"
I've often asked myself that question...

So I went to an excellent Pulitzer Prize Winning Drama "Sweat" at Sacramento's Capital State Theatre tonight, a group of us were discussing the Art/Theatre scene in Sacramento.

Someone likened the idea that Greta Grewig's film "Lady Bird" was to Sacramento what Gus Van Sant's film "My Own Private Idaho" was to Portland, Oregon. Both Director's films were their debut films with young unknown actors with knockout brave performances.

"My Own Private Idaho"(1991) launched the careers of two very young actors Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix with Portland being a character in the film. My Own Private Idaho gave Portland national attention that it never quite received before.

"Lady Bird"(2017) launched the careers of two very young actors Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet with Sacramento being a character in the film. Lady Bird gave Sacramento national attention that it never quite received before. (Lady Bird was set in 2002 Sacramento).

Both films got a lot of love and praise from the art and film critics.

I remember going to Portland for the first time in the mid 90's when Portland was first being talked about quite a bit as it was becoming this cool interesting city. It still had rough edges and on first glance it wasn't obvious what was so cool about it and what was the appeal...but it was certainly this unique place with its own personality developing into an interesting unique city.

I think Sacramento is where Portland was in the mid to late 90's and this comparison with the two films I thought was appropriate.

BTW, "Lady Bird" was more successful at the box office and won 2 Golden Globes, and 5 Academy Award nominations. "My Own Private Idaho" did not do well at the box office and didn't get nominated for any Golden Globes nor Academy Awards.
