Hello,

I am looking to expand my fencing if possible, but I cannot find the regulation what I like to do. My house is on the corner lot and I like to expand the fence on the street side. The current fence lines up with the side of the of my house and ends the back fence. I have about 7-10 feet of side yard that is exposed from the fence to the sidewalk. I would like to move the fence closest to the sidewalk as much as possible and start the fence at the front of the dwell. And my front yard has about 15 yards from the dwell to the front sidewalk. So, does anyone know how close I can move my fence to the sidewalk, so I can have more backyard? I cannot seem to find this answers on Sacramento City code.

There is a five foot setback required typically.

I am going through this same situation myself. The rule is no closer than 5 feet from the PROPERTY LINE. Whether or not that happens to be the same as the edge of the sidewalk, depends where you can put it. Be careful, in my case the surveryor stakes capped and stamped were one foot ”Projected” into the sidewalk cement to preserve it, which means the markers did not depict the property line. Additionally, be vigilant on a corner lot which side has the shorter and the longer frontage to the street. Regardless of the direction the house is situated, the ”front” of the lot by definition is the shorter of the two sides. In my case, the builders built my ”side” yard fence in my front yard as defined by the city of Sacramento, can my HOA Board is too chicken to issue a variance (the city calls them deviations, fyi). Good luck if you haven't already done it!

Good to know as I may buy the empty lot next to a home under consideration and I'd need to fence that in.
