It's just my husband, myself, and our small dog. There is an opening at UC-Davis that he is considering. Right now we are just doing the initial inquiry as to where to live and how long a commute would be. We really don't want to live more than 30 minutes away from his work and would need a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom rental. We are a tad spoiled in that the military has given us decent sized housing, even here in Hawaii (2100 sf). Since this job is not on a military installation, we must look in the civilian sector with a housing allowance of $2355/mo (to include utilities).

Are there any recommendations for a decent neighborhood that our housing allowance will cover?

You shouldn't havc much difficulty finding something in your price range. Here's the first thing that came up, when I looked on Craigslist. It's smaller than you'd like, but it's also well under your budget. You could contact property management businesses in the area, as well Having a pet will limit your options somewhat, but it's easier to find rentals that accept a small dog than a large one.

I used to live in Davis, but it's been a long time. Since you're looking from out of state, I highly recommend consulting a local real estate agent. This is what I did when I relocated from the west coast to Nashville.

I did a search on Craigslist, but the results seemed to good to be true. But, I'm also looking through the eyes of someone dealing with the costs in the SF Bay Area which are probably higher, but it still seems unrealistic to me to find a 3 bedroom 2 bath house in a good neighborhood in your price range. One thing I knew to be true when I lived in Davis, was that the cost of decent real estate or rentals in that area - were expensive compared to Sacramento. So, I really question the affordable options listed on Craigslist.

So, I really recommend talking to a real estate agent. They are often willing to help you find a rental, because they're hoping they will have the opportunity to help you buy a house in the future.

Just to clarify, do you mean the UCD university in Davis or the UCD Medical Center in Sacramento?

Southwest Woodland. I bought a house and lived there while I worked at UCD until 2009 and then rented the house to UCD grad students. The neighborhood is quiet, middle-class (LOTS of UCD staff and retirees), close to shopping, and a 15 minute commute to campus. You should easily find a suitable rental in your budget.
