Next to the Amtrak station and again in Curtis Park, there used to be train switching yards. While the switching yards are closed, the rail lines themselves are still active. The reason the state rail museum is in Old town is because historically, the City of Sacramento is one of the big rail cities on the west coast, with a fair amount of rail lines still converging near the older parts of the city.

There are rail lines going through midtown. You have heavy rail lines that share the right of ways with light rail lines. The Railroad musuem runs excursion trains along the Sacramento River. there are trains running along Elvas.

Given the pollution problems associated with trains, if I had a sensitivity to pollution, I probably wouldn't want to live in any of these older neighborhoods. Moreover, most of the freeways in Sacramento converge on this region. Additionally, most of older street grid has fairly high traffic flows.

I am not saying that the neighborhoods themselves are bad, but if I had a sensitivity to air pollution, they aren't the neighborhoods I would want to live in.

If I had a sensitivity to pollution, I would be looking for a neighborhood that is far from traffic, far from freeways and far from rail lines in a place with a lot of trees. To me, that probably means one of the older suburbs and probably as close to the American River Bike Trail as I could because the River acts as a large traffic barrier.

This is wonderful feedback, thank you! You've given me some great places to take a closer look at. Please, anyone else who would like to put in a plug for their favorite Sac neighborhood, chime in
