I think it depends where in Sacramento. For your average American family, cities like Roseville, Granite Bay, Folsom, Rocklin, and all that are where you see it (with young couples sprinkled in). I live in Natomas, and when I'm shopping, I see it a lot too. Moreso than when I lived in the Northeast. Out of all the major cities in California, I'd say Sacramento is definitely more family oriented. There isn't a singles scene here.

If building a basketball arena is such a huge financial windfall to local property owners, the Maloofs should buy some land and move the team to that new site, then they can capture that money and pay for the stadium.

The reason the Maloofs are coming to the public trough is that the spillover effects of any new arena by no means pay for the cost of building and running a new arena.

Nothing is stopping the Kings from building a new arena. They have the money to do it. They can even recover the cost of building the new arena by passing the higher costs into higher ticket prices.

If the city, county or state has millions of dollars to spend on Arenas, I can think of thousands of projects that are more important to spend that money on. There is the tent city full of homeless people, restaffing the firestations that are being closed on the rotating basis, or fixing the schools. If millions for billionaires is the best way government leaders can think of to spend money why not cut taxes by several millions of dollars so that the city, county and state governments don't have this much money lying to around to squander?

Transfering taxpayer money to the Maloofs is the worse kind of corporate socialism.

Why should my tax money be used to subsidize your entertainment?
I'll not touch the socialist quote; that's a rediculous buzzword that everyone uses now when they can't really back up a point. 5 years ago, no one was a socialist. Now, everyone is.

Again, your attitude amplifies my point about the attitude here. That stadium would have cleaned up an eyesore that is the rail/junkyard by downtown, would have replenished the river area and created a boardwalk, and it would have brightened the cities' overall image.

This was about a lot more than "entertainment", it's about having some pride in your city for christ sake. Instead, Sacramento will lose it's only team because they force them to play in a broken down barnyard way out by the airport. Pathetic.

A nonresponse response. You know that giving a subsidy to the billionare Maloof family is corporate socialism and that you cannot refute that. So you just try to ignore that point.

This is only about entertaintment.

This NBA team is group of millionaires who work for a family of billionaires. The Maloofs own their present stadium, as well as a casino, a beer distributor and an entertainment company. If they want a new stadium they have the resources to build a new stadium.

No one is forcing the Maloofs to leave. If the Maloofs want to build a new stadium, I am quite confident that the local permitting boards will provide them with the permits to build a new stadium anywhere in the region they want to build it, including downtown.

No one is 'forcing' the Maloofs to play in Natomas.

The real issue is what is an appropiate use of public funds. Why is giving money to team of millionaires owned by a family of billionaires an appropiate use of public funds?

The region has more pressing issues. If you wanted to brighten the regions image, I imagine doing something about the people living in the tent city along the American River would do a lot more to brighten the regions image. What kind of community provides cash to team of millionaires owned by a family of billionaires before it provides shelter for the most vulnerable in the society?

There is a host of more pressing problems in the region that need public funds much more than an NBA team full of millionaires playing for an ownership group of billionaires.

Quite frankly, Sacramento is pretty awesome. Go to Arden Way, or any of the smaller cities to the right of the city and they are pretty nice. I always get the feeling when I'm there that it'd be a good place to live every day. IMO there are no scary parts of anything like that, it's all nice or decent enough to be in, but you will be happy in Sacramento.

Sacramento is what you make of it. If you want to be depressed and complain, then go ahead, but don't drag Sac down with you. If you don't like it, then please leave. If you are looking for cool, trendy things to do every day then you might want to move to SF. But Sac has a good blend of city and outdoor activities and is better and more reasonably priced than most Bay Area suburbs.

I will be flying back to Orlando Mon., after having been here in Sacramento for the last 6 months, and I must say that I couldn't be happier. Sacramento is boring, hot, dry and land locked. The people are rather perculiar as well. They think that their dogs are actually "people"..and I'm not kidding. Finally, it will be a tremendous relief to never again have to hear, after asking a local what there is to do around Sac.? "Have you been down to see the railroad museum?" I feel like saying, "Okay, right after I have my 3rd heart attack from riding the "bike trail", I'll get right on down to stare at the choo choo.

Sacramento is like taking De Moines Iowa and placing it in the heart of the Big Valley. People move there to still live in California but live a mid-western lifestyle.

Well then, did you try the aerospace museum, the car museum, the art galleries, or one of the fairly ridiculous number of festivals and street fairs that happen here?

Good luck in humid, non landlocked Orlando. Unfortunately we don't have an ocean handy.
