I have accepted a new job in Modesto, CA. Currently I live in the San Diego area with my girlfriend. Both of us are in our 20s. We are both educated, and have no children. I am willing to commute for my job up to an hour one way. So, what is the best "gay friendly" city in the central valley? I also want to live in a safe area as we are both females. Some of the research I have done has been on Modesto, Turlock, Manteca, Lodi, Stockton, and Elk Grove. Any of these cities rate better than the other as far as "gay friendliness" is concerned? Feedback please.

You might have better luck posting this thread on the general California forum or checking back throughout the week. The commute from Elk Grove to Modesto is likely well over an hour. Too few of the regular posters have enough detailed knowledge about the other areas you are interested in to give you useful feedback.

In general, I don't think any of those cities will be particularly gay friendly, or even all that tolerant--about the best you're likely to find is thinly veiled hostility or, at best, indifference. Sacramento is about the only city in the region that has a large and organized gay/lesbian community. Elk Grove might be a reasonable compromise, if kind of a long drive--you can go north into Sacramento for social events and cultural activities, and south to work.

Thanks for the info. I have it posted in the general CA forum also. I'm not expecting to find a "gay friendly" hot spot in the central valley, but at least maybe an area of tolerance. We won't be fully moving until after the beginning of the year, so hopefully between now and then I will get some more feedback and ideas.

Winemaking is an industry that seems to attract a fair amount of homosexuals. Of the communities you listed Modesto is probably your best bet.

Check out the pride center in Modesto here.
