My partner and I are considering moving from Massachusetts to Sacramento for a job (I already have the offer). We are in our early thirties, one attorney, one nurse practitioner. Neither of us have spent time in Sacramento, so we are trying to find information via online forums. The questions:

1. We have three dogs. Two of them are 16 lbs. (Italian Greyhounds), the other is 80 lbs. (Greyhound). I have not been able to find any rentals that would allow three dogs. How likely is it to find a place that would allow three dogs? We are willing to pay a bit more, or have a larger security deposit, but also don't want to live in a crap place.

2. We only have one car and hope to keep it that way. I would like to be able to bike to work downtown. From reading other people's posts, it sounds like we would probably want to live in Midtown, East Sac, or someplace like that. Are there other places to consider that are bike friendly/accessible?

Any information would be appreciated.

I think it would be difficult to find a place in East Sac or Midtown that would be accepting of your dogs, and that you would find acceptable.

Have you considered living along the rail line, and using it to commute to and from downtown? I know the Rosemont and Rancho Cordova areas should have quite a few homes up for rent, and based upon the difficult economic conditions, I would imagine that you could find one that would accept the dogs.

Every rental I've seen was generally one dog, under 20 pounds. I'd agree about looking for a house, farther out.

I used to rent, and always had two or three cats. I always found that the worse the place or landlord, the more willing they were to allow pets. Sad but true.

If you are looking for the more options regarding gay friendly neighborhoods in the Sacramento region, you might want to look here.

Then you might want to look at some of the bike maps for the Sacramento region here.

Online Bike Maps - 511 Sacramento Region Travel Info

In many respects Davis might be your best option. Its has the best bike infrastructure in the country. More people get around by bike in Davis than anywhere in the country. If you are trying to get around by bike and avoid using a car, Davis is just a really great place to do so. Its a nice place to live and its very gay friendly. See video here.

Some of it depends upon how hardcore you and your partner are about biking. Its about 14 miles from Davis to downtown Sac by bike. But the route is flat and for most of the route there are no stop signs or stop lights. The route across the causeway is rather pretty. If you are less hardcore, you can bring your bike on broad the Amtrak Capitols trains from Davis to Sacramento. Amtrak offers a monthly pass for $132 and a ten ride pass for $49 (if you just wanted to take the train on rainy days)

Along the American River between Folsom and Sacramento is the regions most popular and probably best bike trail.

Roughly parallel to it is the sacramento rt gold line.

If your partner was to find work outside of downtown Sacramento and you wanted to find something in biking distance to both of your places of employment, a community along the American River bike path might give you more options. A monthly pass on goldline is going to run you $100.

If you bike to work, you are entitled to $20 a month from your employer.
