If it wasn't for Portland, Oregon would be a hard core conservative state. Even Eugene has a substantial conservative population.

Definitely. We lived there twelve years and never had much to do with OSU. Corvallis is also the most straight-up progressive town in the state. It doesn't have the bohemian vibe that you'd find in Ashland, Eugene, and many parts of Portland. The progressive scene just comes from a high average level of education. Corvallis has one of the highest levels of PhD infusion I've ever seen. If you have less than a Masters Degree, you may feel below the midpoint of educational preparation there. The livability in Corvallis is excellent, among the very best in the PNW.

funny to read this post considering we said the exact same thing..we left Wa for NM (6yrs) only to find the 2nd most corrupt state in the country...Our plan now is Salem.....
