There is no profit on a $50 background check.

It costs me $25 out of my pocket per person to run the credit and criminal and, in addition, about 2 hours per person to do all the phoning and reference checking. I don't charge for my time, but if I had a rental agency and the person who was doing the phoning and checking was being paid, then that is also part of the cost of doing a background check and it is going to be added to the fee.

Background checks for people from out of state are more work and they take longer to run, so they are even more expensive to do.

In Oregon, if the landlord is charging an application fee, he should be able to show you his written criteria before you pay your money. That way you can see if there is anything on there that is going to automatically disqualify you.

And he should be able to show he actually ran the check if he turns you down. There is a common Scam of listing one apartment or home and taking dozens of applications, but not actually running the background check. Don't be a victim. I was, and I turned it over to DOJ. I got my money back.

We got approved for all 3 places and chose only 1. I understand it is time and money...money is one thing but time...we only have so much of.

Thanks for clarifying that!
