If you're planning on tilling beds, you might want to wait till September when the soil is more workable after our warm, dry summers. We have clay, so it's nothing but a heavy, sticky mess in spring. You'll get nothing but clay clumps if you work the soil when it's so wet.

I was on the Westside Gardner's site and he has a nice calendar of what to plant when.

Exactly. It's why I like Steve Soloman's book because it is just about gardening west of the Cascades. He talks a lot about our soil.

I just ordered my seeds from them two days ago. I'm going to try some early tomatoes under a cloche this year. Someone I know planted them last year with success.

I found this thread via a Google search for what to plant when in the Willamette Valley. I was so happy to see that the OP is from Florida and brought his earth boxes. I moved here from the Tampa Bay area last April and brought my earth boxes too! I'd love to know what is working for him/her.

I am a beginner and enjoy the ease of growing herbs in my earth boxes. I would like to know which herbs would be best to grow for me. I enjoy cilantro (NEVER have any luck with that), Rosemary (my beautiful bush died over this past winter), tarragon, lovage ( I think mine is coming back now in my earth box.. unless it's a weed) and basil (is anything easier?). I also had great success with green bunching onions in my earth box. In Florida they grew almost as big as leeks - they were huge! I tried them here and they stayed scrawny and died. Maybe I planted them too late?

It's March 5th now. Is it too late to start seeds indoors? When should I plant my seedlings or small plants outdoors in earth boxes?

Thank you all for any advice.

L J
