Just spent 3 hours at AT&T trying to sort a phone, cant do a next plan so would be 2 year contract but is £145 a month (for 2 Iphones!!)

Why is it harder to get a phone than a car/house etc???

Am I missing a trick here and why are the costs so high?

Anyones advice welcome. Centurylink will bundle me a phone with my other stuff but again has to be on contract and after 3 hours in AT&T I don't feel I can spend another hour on the phone !Life's too short!

I know that Verizon has month to month plans with no contract. IMO, they have better service/coverage than AT&T anyway.

I have a smartphone that I had in UK which is unlocked and using a month to month top up with AT&T, so you recommend just buy the handset and then just attach a plan?? If so thanks I think that maybe the only way, hopefully can transfer number if switch from AT&T smartphone to IPhone.Hopefully as cost effective

Yes, I think that might be the best way to do it. You should be able to just transfer your number over. I wouldn't think having an overseas number would be an issue. I know it isn't a problem with stateside numbers.

1 - you get what you pay for.
2 - Verizon does have a very good coverage area
Best thing to do is to go to their Cottonwood office,
and be prepared to get there at opening time, or wait for a long time !!

Since you will only be here for a *short time* ...
When you start talking to a *live* person, make sure your phone can be used !!

Your turn to lurk on the net ...

Any of your new friends, a member of Costco ?
If no help there, send me a DM.
Ask them to get you *in* the store and talk to the phone guys there.
Usually pretty helpful, at least that is what we think.

What did your *back home* provider tell you ?
Do they have an International temporary possibility ?

You have internet in your abode now ?
With short term contracts, always try to use WiFi for everything.
>> Free data usage, none of *your* data limit !
Updates for phone Apps only when WiFi available !

Has your hubby talked to his employer ?
They may have something for temp people ?
When I worked in Switzerland, the Company that *hosted* me, let me use *their* phone !

As always, more ways than one to skin a cat !!

One more thing:
I assume you have internet now, else where are you lurking now ??
Get a second e-mail address, to use for those websites
which require an email address to sign up for info !!
Use that e-mail address as your junk mail address.
Never give your regular e-mail address to anybody else but family and close friends !!

I have a US number as unlocked my phone when I got here and got a US sim through AT&T. But want to get IPhone now for me and possibly my oldest

Hubby has IPhone through work so no probs there for him.

I have Costco membership so I might pop in there and have a chat with the guys or head to cottonwood heights and talk to Verizon. Hopefully I wont be in there for 3 hours like AT&T.Issue was with ID before but have that now as have Utah Licence.Maybe it takes so long as down to the credit thing as was trying to do a next12 contract.

Will swing by Costco tomorrow and see what they say, otherwise friend has sams club membership too

Thanks for all the advice

Monty!

Don't do contract, get a prepaid type phone and get t mobile, walmart family plan or similar. Look at the one plus phones for great affordable phones or see what walmart etc offers in unlocked phones. Costco just does contract. totally unhelpful IMO. Can't you just swap out the sim card in your phone to a prepaid sim from t mobile? Most brits wouldn't touch the contract phone system in the US because it is so effed up.

Again a personal preference.

I found T-mobile to be not as good, coverage-wise, as Verizon.
Where I *hang out*, T-Mobile was not available.
Verizon on the other hand has never failed me.

No need to counter with another answer,
it is a pure personal opinion,
so make sure what the coverage area is, and go from there.

Hiya, I have a Samsung, and have that all up and running on a pay monthly which is fab, want to get daughter an IPhone S and was going to do contract so could bundle all the phones together on a plan but judging by your comments its better to just get the phones and pay as you go. I pay $40 a month and get 500 mgb 500 mins and unlimited text which I never get through anyway. So maybe I just buy her a handset and do the same as I do and avoid contracts!
Apart from that all is well in the world. My kids are playing out in our neighbourhood with about 8 kids including next doors, my youngest enjoyed a friends party today and my daughter scored 4 goals for her soccer team to win them the game after they went 1-0 down. They won 5-1 and all the team were delighted. Utah you rock !!!
