Hello, I am relocating to SLC this Fall for a job. Could you please advice on good public high schools and a safe neighborhood. I am looking into renting. Don't mind a commute. We are not religious.

Park City has the best schools and is relatively liberal on the religious scale. You could also live in the avenues/east liberty and send your kids to Rowland Hall (private) as that is also a liberal area. Outside of that the ‘good’ areas will be super LDS with good public schools. Davis county has great schools and we liked living there. Highland/Alpine are very nice areas in Utah country but again super LDS. I actually seek out higher participating LDS areas as the quality of life is better for me the higher that % goes up even though I’m a Liberatarian aeithest in a mixed race household.

Good luck!

Why Park City, Davis and Utah counties would be interesting to someone with job in SLC beats me.

Salt Lake city itself has a number of good neighborhoods. I am not too clued into schools, so don't have much advice on that. Do have friends who's children go to Rowland Hall - they like it but not cheap. The neighborhoods depend a bit upon your budget. As mentioned - avenues, East bench (St Mary's where we live, Arcadia Heights) are well located at an elevation. Harvard - Yale area has some nice distinctive housing. Then, you have places that are a bit farther out but nice - Millcreek, Olympus Cove, Cottonwood Heights - for instance - that would meet the safe neighborhoods criteria. This list is not complete. But, a lot depends upon your budget - and it is hard to say too much without it.

Yeah I would say any areas east of 5th east from downtown all the way south will be fine. Even most parts of downtown are completely fine with a lot of apartments going in all over the place. I live in Sugarhouse and really like it, Liberty Park area is nice, the avenues, Rose Park has nice areas and is a bit cheaper, and some of the suburbs just south of the city such as millcreek and cottonwood heights are nice. West High, Highland, and East high are all good high schools with great college credit programs and have a lot of diversity which I think is a good thing.

But as the first three of us commenters have highlighted, it depends on what you personally want. There are areas further out that are fine, but the city has nice areas and will be less of a culture shock since you are not religious.

Thank you all!
Yes, I would prefer to stay in the city, even though I don’t mind commuting to work, in the beginning it will be just myself and my son. Haven’t considered a private school, but I’ll look into that as well. I assume one has to be residing in the school district to enroll in a particular public school.
My rental budget is $1500-1700.
