Big blocks are great for walking, biking, jogging, because of less intersections.

St. Paul MN is exactly the same way. As if everyone is constipated.

If you think SLC is weird, you should drive south a little

SLC is about as diverse as it gets for Utah, with a pretty sizable transplant population in addition to the true blue mormons...which I suppose could account for some of the weirdness you perceived as far as social interaction. People are trying to size up those whom they're talking to and may come in with their own preconceived notions about the weirdness of the other party depending on whether they're pegged as mormon/not mormon, from utah/not from utah, etc., which might lend itself to being a bit more socially guarded. As a transplant from new england myself, there are definite differences in how people interact out here vs. back home, which can take some getting used to and may account for some of the weirdness as well. Just spitballing here. That said, there are many other things that make the area an awesome place to live, such that whatever weirdness isn't significant enough to be a disqualifier for me.

Or the feeling of unease/anxiety could be because they knew 5% beer was on the way!
