One of our former regular posters worked for Dish and said their equipment was newer than DirecTV's and better shielded from snow. I can only tell you from personal experience that DirecTV went out in a soft snow and I was not happy. I'm back on Comcast w/no snow issues.

And that's a great tidbit about dish, southernbelle.

Just wanted to share an update on Qwest- I live out in the boonies in West Jordan and a few months back got their 1.5 Mbps connection. I was really impressed with the whole set up experience- they mail you everything (cords modem, install CD) and you do it all yourself and it is EASY. No Comcast installation guy visit, no install price, no waiting around, easy instructions- really perfect when you're stressed and just moving in somewhere. In the few months I've had their service, I've never had an outage.

The speed does vary- I'd say I only average 1-1.1 Mbps which is pretty normal as you never really reach the stated speed. The upload speed is much less and can sometimes drop quite low. And surprisingly you can do quite a bit with a 1 Mbps connection (streaming videos work albeit with a bit more buffering needed).

Billing has been fine; no issues so far (unlike Comcast in which my bill was randomly $1-2.00 different each month), but the cost to rent a modem is now $8.00/month!

I've flirted with paying extra and going with Xmission as my ISP, but Qwest has been just fine!
