I may be moving to the Salt Lake area for a new job and one concern of mine are snakes. I had a traumatic experience with a rattler living in South Dakota two years ago and ever since then, I have had a horrible fear of snakes (harmless or not). Has anyone encountered any snakes in SLC and surrounding area? I'm looking to live within about 25 miles of downtown SLC. Thanks!

You will find snakes in the mountains and in the more rural areas, but you won't find them downtown. I am pretty sure you won't find them in a developed suburban area either.

I've found plenty of snakes. Rattlers are somewhat common above the upper benches, but the majority below are gopher snakes. New developments high on the hill are where you'll usually run into them.

But snakes aren't looking for people to attack any more than people are looking for them. Every time I've run across a rattler it just wanted to get away from me. I back off and they do too, then we both go on our merry way.

I have lived in Cottonwood Heights, which is about 15 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, for 27 years and have never seen any kind of a snake in our area. As has been mentioned, the more mountainous areas would see some potential for snakes, but they are almost unheard of in most parts of the city and suburbs.

Snakes are few and far between - in the populated areas, at least.

chances are that the only snakes you will see while living in a suburban area in slc is a dead one on the side of the road. but there is still the possibility that you will run across a live one.

i try to catch them when i see them. but i realize that i am in the minority there...

I was wondering the same thing. Glad some other snake-a-phobe posted for me.
