We are considering a move to Park City from Canada. What will we have to do about our car?

We would like to bring it with us as it's relatively new and in excellent condition. Does anyone have any experience with transferring a vehicle? Are there any unique issues re: licensing, insurance, environmental testing requirements (etc.) in Utah?

Do not know what it is like today, but umpteen years ago, we took our car (bought in the USA) to Switzerland,
then shipped it back to Utah where we decided to settle.
Now here the crummy part.
The people from the whatever office, had a hard time believing that it was the same car
that we took from California to Switzerland and back to Utah.
They kept asking me if it was modified in Europe ....

So I made up a story that we could not drive our car in Europe because of some stupid rule,
the Utah officials would not understand.
I even made up a letter that certified that the car was never used there.
Only then were they willing to license it in Utah.

Now on your car, you will have to prove that the car meets or exceeds the emission standards as presently constituted in Utah.
How you will do that I have NO IDEA .....
Maybe contact your dealer there and have them check with the manufacturer if they can issue a certificate of compliance..??
If you can do that, I see no problem to get it licensed here.

Coming from Canada it shouldn't be a problem. Canadian vehicles and American vehicles are allowed to be registered and travel across the boarders all the time. I wouldn't expect a problem if you have all of your immigration and employment papers together, in addition to all your normal vehicle papers including title, purchase agreement, and VIN number.

We've recently heard that the process is more involved but not difficult.

We are importing our vehicle and therefore must get a document from our car manufacturer outlining that the vehicle at spec meets the requirements for the area. That document gets presented to customs either at the border or at a local airport within a given period of time. The car then must be tested to be sure it is running properly and meets emissions standards as per any other vehicle. Then it's time for insurance and license.
