I read somewhere that you need some other IDs, for example a passport, birth certificate, etc. However I think they also want to make sure of where you live, as in your address.

So I'm thinking maybe some kind of mail correspondence like a receipt from Sears or maybe Bank account statements?

Or would I need to have a bill sent to my address? (i.e. SAWS or CPS)

Go back and look at the link again. It's your identity you must prove, not where you live. I don't recall ever having to show proof of where I lived (i.e. CPS bill) for anything other than enrolling my kids in school. As to your question, if you already have a TX DL, that's proof enough. However, if you don't have one, you need to have your birth certificate, social security card, and any other unexpired ID or DL, your voter's registration card, military records/ID, etc. When my kids got theirs, all they needed was their birth certificate - has to be the original one with the seal, their Social Security card, TEA form proving that they were enrolled in school, photo ID - which was their school ID, and the form from the driving school.

Beware of DPS at this time - kids are out of school and the offices are packed. We went to the office in Boerne and were able to get out within 1 1/2 hours.

Hope that helps some!

I hope you are right catriona because my dad keeps pestering me that I would need a bill to prove my residence (including other ids like you mentioned).

So I searched and found this website: Applying for a New Texas DMV Identification Card - DMV Guide

I know it isnt official but it does have detailed info especially this part:
The basic procedure is similar to obtaining a driver license, but without any testing requirements. Furthermore, there are no age restrictions. Any Texas resident can get one as long as they can provide proof of identity. Make sure you present proof of a physical address.

Thanks lots guys!

i moved to texas and had to get a texas id. all i had was my old (expired) id, ss card, and vital docs. nothing that said i now lived in texas. i wasn't even getting mail at the time, and none of the bills were in my name. i'm not sure if it'd be the same for drivers licenses but since it's pretty much the same thing, i don't see why it wouldn't be.

Noncasus, I picked up a couple of forms when we were at DPS. On one form, you sign that you swear you are who you are and that all statements are true. I recall someone ahead of us getting a new lic because he had moved - he was griping about the cost just to change the address. I don't recall anything about having proof that he moved, though. If you decide to call one of the offices to see, try one of the out of town offices. A couple of months ago, I tried locally and gave up.

It is a generic site, set up to cover all states. Texas doesn't even HAVE a DMV, we have DPS. Go ahead and bring a CPS bill if you want to, but you should not need it.

I usually bring my SS card. If you need to show proof of address... maybe bring a utility bill or something with your name and address. But I've only ever needed to bring my SS card.

I don't know if it is different for a state id, but since we just moved here, I went to get my license last week. I was required to bring either a birth certificate or unexpired passport (this was the most important part). I also needed my social security card and they asked for my vehicle registration. Hope that helps some.
