I will be coming to San Antonio for my home hunting visit in a few weeks and I'm not sure where to start looking for a place to live as I am trying to do all my internet research first. I am looking to rent for about a year or so, not buying yet.

I'd like to find a place where I'll be around other 30-something singles/professionals and near the things to do in town, the restaurants, bars, shopping, etc. Is Riverwalk, ok? I am looking for a condo/loft/townhouse and not really an apartment in a big complex.

I will also be working near USAA - and don't want a crazy commute but I used to live in CA so a commute isn't a complete deal breaker. I love my satellite radio.

Any direction, help you provide is great. Thank you.

Welcome!

Lots of info about this stuff. There aren't a ton of residential options downtown, and though things are improving, downtown 'proper' tends to be focused on tourists. If you want urban neighborhoods, search for King William, Southtown, Lavaca, Monte Vista, Mahncke Park, Tobin Hill, Alamo Heights, Olmos Park. These are all historic neighborhoods close to downtown and have independent restaurants, bars, galleries, etc. None are close to USAA, though the commute wouldn't be terrible.

Other folks here can speak to suburban options. Good luck.

If I were single and looking for a place to rent I'd definitely look at the list dvlpr provided. And no, they aren't CLOSE to USAA, as in walking to work, but your commute would likely only 20 minutes or so. You'd be going the opposite direction of most traffic as you'd be heading out of downtown in the a.m. and toward downtown in the p.m.

I work at the Health Science Center, which is a couple miles from USAA. We live inside Loop 410 in a very cool, very 1950s neighborhood called Monticello Heights - it's not the single life but it also isn't choked with McMansions and minivans. For us it's a great compromise as I am definitely a downtown girl and my husband is a weekend bbq type guy ("Gotta have a great yard!").

Welcome to San Antonio!

Ill echo dvlpr too.

I can tell you it is roughly 5 minutes from Monte Vista or Olmos Park to I-10 (the fwy USAA is located off). Your commute cannot be more than 20 minutes total door-to-door from that area. I can make it nearly out to Boerne in 25 minutes from that area.

For your reference, Monte Vista, Mahncke Park, Tobin Hill, Alamo Heights, and Olmos Park are just north of downtown.

King William, Southtown, and Lavaca are just south of downtown. King William/Southtown will give you the most walkable option. There are lots of restaurants and galleries in that area, but no real grocery.

Thank you for your suggestions...

Any recommendations on additional resources to find the right neighborhood and area for me?
