Here's the KSAT video:
Disabled Mother Struggles To Get To Work - Video - KSAT San Antonio (http://www.ksat.com/video/24250975/index.html - broken link)

I just saw this newsclip on Felicia Valadez and it is an absolutely heartbreaking news story!

It's these kind of stories that make me wish I was well off and had money to help taxpaying/deserving American citizens like her in need!

I've struggled a lot financially myself this past year but when I see a news story like this on TV, it really puts my struggles into perspective!

KSAT 12 says they received an overwhelming response to last night's story, so they will have a followup tonight on the Nightbeat.

Hopefully someone out there can help as I doubt VIA will change their policy.

I didn't watch/read the story. Knowing how transit systems work, my guess reading the headline and post is that VIA not providing service to Hollywood Park has to do with the city government in Hollywood Park choosing not to pay for VIA service. This would have been a conscious choice made by the mayor and council there.

This is an example of why I don't watch local news. Aside from the obvious plea to your emotions to draw you into the story (disabled mother of 3!!!) the story boils down to this: BREAKING NEWS - People have to walk to/from bus stop locations!!!

Not to diminish this woman's hardship, but, the trumpeting of people's rough situations is not what I want to get from the news. Must have been a slow news day.

VIA Trans is a service that normally provides door to door transit to disabled riders. Since Hollywood Park opted out of VIA, the closest they can her is the city limit.

I also no longer watch the local news. Well, unless I'm in it.

Regarding the story, I put the entire blame on Hollywood Park. I cannot believe the audacity of the mayor when he said, "they (VIA) should be able to take her right to her office building." I can't see why VIA is being made out to be the bad guy here when it is Hollywood Park who doesn't want to pay for the service.

My bad, I don't know how I missed that it was specifically VIA since it's plastered all over the post. Perhaps the donations will help her move out of Hollywood Park, or buy a car, or whatever works.

Okay....I'm confused here. Did the company relocate after she was hired on? Did she not check the VIA routes to ensure she could get to where she needed to be without having to walk?

I don't see why anyone is a "bad guy" in this situation (which is another reason I think it's sensationalized). Nothing says Hollywood Park HAS to pay for VIA, and if you want to use it you have the right to not live there. Now if they used to pay for it and suddenly stopped, I guess that sucks that you might have to move, but...life sucks sometimes.

Maybe she needed a job asap and took it knowing this but took it because it was the least convenient of other alternatives. Been in the situation myself: either job offered was going to be two bus rides and 1 1/2 hour to get there. Hope she can move homes or move employment soon.

Oh geez, VIA was dropped because the route was a nuisance, noisey and short of a few maids, was completely unused. I doubt the mayor, or anyone else here cares if she is dropped off. VIA just needs to make an exception where it is due. There's no need to bring back those lumbering, noxious buses to justify a couple of people being dropped off by the shuttle service.

I also doubt anyone would have a problem with bus stops being erected along the retail areas.
