You should be happy to give a gift and not worry about what comes in return. If your relatives had any respect for you, they should have already said "dont worry about gifts, until you get back on your feet".

I think you should start giving gifts again when you are both emotionally and financially stable.

Good Luck getting back on your feet.
If you were single and had to buy for everyone's birthdays and christmases, you might feel overwhelmed too. My birthday hardly gets noticed and I actually prefer it that way. I am one person on one income and tire of feeling obligated to buy all of these gifts. My sisters' husbands are much better off than I am and can afford to splurge.

I agree, nowadays Christmas has very little to do with the religion and a lot with commercialism.
Seeing Christmas decoration before Thanksgiving make me sick! The stores/media advertising is obnoxious.
Lots of people do not have jobs, or money - but feel pressured to buy things they actually do not need, or do not want spend money.
Most workplaces has the stupid (IMO) white elephant or other gift exchange ideas, where the workers are pushed to spend $20-30 on some ridiculous junk while in reality no one has the extra time to go shopping or even spend money for it.
Kids do not associate Christmas with religion, they just want gifts, the more expensive the better.

Default I don't understand the guilt,

Either your sister is very manipulative or you are very extremely open to suggestion. Distance youself a little, man.

These are kids that have everything already and I mean everything. I love them tremendously and unconditionally but always feel that the Holidays is just an excuse to empty my wallet and not get much in return. If I spend $200 on them, I can expect a $50-60 gift from one sister for my birthday & Christmas and an even cheaper gift from my other sister. One of the sisters read me the riot act when I protested about not buying her a gift since I already buy gifts for each of her kids' birthdays and x-mas. She said that I shouldn't feel that way, joy in giving, blah blah blah.

Every year, I just wish that I could go on a winter vacation far away from the family and not have to go through all of this commercialism of X-mas.

Thoughts?

This is the one part of Christmas I truly dont like (and as stated before I live for it). I am kind of a go to work, do my job, go home kind of guy. I dont really hang out with the people I work with and dont get all that close to them so it bothers me when I am forced to buy a gift in some exchange. Of course you do it because you dont want to be "that guy" who ruins the whole thing.

Thankfully I work from home now and my co-workers are spread out around the country so it is no longer an issue.

Yep, me too! I do not socialize with anyone at work, I don't know what they like or dislike, and frankly I don't care. So why should I care about the gift?
Sometimes I just call sick that day. ...
I used to get those useless, sometimes ugly or tacky gifts and store them in the garage for a garage sale. But then I said: enough!

There's a few folks I buy gifts for at work. Drop it by their house over the weekend and go on our way. Don't care whether we get something back or not - we do it because we want to. My nieces/nephews stopped getting gifts from us when they were babies - 5 kids in our family, each of us had (on average) 4 kids - you can go broke REAL quick! No one got their feelings hurt - we all understood.
From time to time, we come across a "perfect" gift for a sister or BIL during the year. When we do, we get it and set it aside for Christmas. Again - we do it because WE want to. If they have nothing for us, frankly it doesn't matter. It's about the giving. Guess our folks taught us right....
