I really like the Mid-Century Mod architecture, but I'm having a difficult time locating these types of homes in SA. Does anyone know of any neigborhoods that may have this type of home or anything modern looking?

Ya gotta come back to Palm Springs if you want a mid-century modern!

I've been extensively searching SA real estate from here in Charleston, since we are considering a move there, and am also a huge MCM fan. Here's what I'm finding, for what it's worth, but locals can probably help more.

I'm finding that they are scattered in the older neighborhoods - I've seen some in Terrell Heights, Balcones Heights, Oak Forest, and I forget the others. You pretty much have to sift through all the listings, or if your site has a "search by year built" feature limit it to 40's through 60's, maybe early 70's. Searching by keyword is no help, as MCM architecture doesn't seem to be something many realtors recognize, so it doesn't end up in the descriptions.

Almost any city that saw a suburban housing boom in the 50's will have some of that type, and SA does, from what I'm seeing, but you have to dig for them.

Also, the [mod cut] site posts MCM houses for sale, and sometimes they throw in a few San Antonio ones also. Hope that helps, and good luck!

P.S. Here's a link to one of the ones in Terrell Hills, by architect Milton Ryan. Needs work - the remodeling is out of character for the house, but great potential.

Thank you MPinSC, can you post some of the sites you have been looking thru? Which site are you using to search for homes in SA?

I used so many that I can't remember them all - was just googling SA real estate or SA MLS and clicking on the various sites. Most of them require you to register, so I give them a real email address and a fake phone # (sorry, but I don't need annoying calls if I'm just browsing.)

There were a good many on the ReMax.com site.

I've been told that Castle Hillls has mid-century modern homes and is quite a decent area; mostly upper middle class with residents residing there for 25+ years.

The whole concept of MCM is a little lost on most agents. You will have to sort through the 50's era subdivisions.

In Houston I maintain the list of available mod properties for the local modernist preservation group, Houston Mod. I am on the board and we keep them posted on the web site in hopes of matching people who "get it" with the houses so they will be preserved. So if you change your mind and look at Houston, you can always find them at http://www.houstonmod.org

Thanks Modster, I've seen your site and you have amazing MCMs in your city. If I don't have any luck in SA i'll try Houston. SA is suffering from a McMansion epidemic and I figured i'll try it first since people really don't appreciate MCM homes like they do in Dallas, Austin and Houston and probably will get a better deal. Thanks!
